Gibraltar’s history

Located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory historically recognised for its strategic position and enduring stability. Once known as one of the Pillars of Hercules, alongside the Rif Mountains of Morocco, it has been central to maritime history and mythology for centuries.

The name ‘Gibraltar’ stems from the Arabic Jabal Ṭāriq, meaning “Mountain of Tariq,” a tribute to the Moorish commander who captured the Rock in 711 AD. Following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, Gibraltar became a British territory in perpetuity.

Today, Gibraltar operates as a self-governing jurisdiction, with defence and foreign affairs overseen by the United Kingdom. Its people hold full British citizenship, reflecting the territory’s deep-rooted ties to the United Kingdom.

The Gibraltar advantage

Gibraltar offers a unique combination of political stability, a self-governing parliamentary democracy, and the only common law legal system in mainland Europe. This foundation makes it an ideal jurisdiction for international trusts, foundations, and financial services, supported by a well-established ecosystem of legal, audit, and advisory professionals.

Regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC) to UK standards, Gibraltar upholds robust international compliance. It is officially recognised by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for meeting the highest global standards in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing. Gibraltar is listed alongside leading jurisdictions such as the UK, Germany, Spain, and the US. The territory also maintains a strong reputation for international banking, with strict standards limiting services to assets of legitimate origin.

Gibraltar is particularly attractive for fund structures, offering simplicity, speed to market, tax neutrality, and cost efficiency. Its alignment with the European time zone and post Brexit exemption from the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) further enhance its appeal to fund managers and financial professionals.
